On Current Situations, May 2024
The situation of today is similar to the ones of COVID, but in a different way. Previously it was a asynchronous situation due to COVID, but now it’s because of protests and the NYPD. The thing about it though is that the NYPD serves as more of a threat to students than protestors. I’ve seen hundreds of police forces come up to protests, to protests where the protestors themselves pose no physical threat. These people are simply calling for a ceasefire, to stop the live cultural cleansing of Palestinians. To me it’s a baffling situation even, because police have never showed up at such a scale for actual crimes or even school shootings. It makes me think, do the police even serve to protect the people, or are they protecting something else? So many innocent people have gotten hurt in the process, not by protestors, but by the police and anti-protestors. Either way, this makes a very tense environment on campus and although asynchronous is not ideal, it may be of best interest to prioritize the safety of students.
